Whole Rethinking the Science of Nutrition Summary by Parts
Part 1: Enslaved by the System Summary
Campbell spends a good amount of the book building a good foundation of the importance of a Whole Food Plant Based diet (Usually referred to as the WFPB Diet). This section is dedicated to discussing the basics of how the healthcare system is too focused on medication when many illnesses can be cured or assuaged by simply eating healthier and cleaner. He spends some time breaking down how a WFPB Diet can prevent many of the most feared diagnoses without the side effects of many modern day medications. Lastly in part one, Campbell gives a glimpse into his scientific journey to discovering the benefits of whole foods.
Part 1: Enslaved by the System is broken up into three sections, which are listed below:
-The Modern Health-Care Myth
-The Whole Truth
-My Heretical Path
Part 2: Paradigm as a Prison Summary
Part 2 is dedicated to the scintific concept of reductionism compared to holism. Reductionism tries to view concepts into their smaller components while Holism attempts to look at the picture as a whole. Campbell’s perspective is that modern culture, especially in regards to nutrition, as become too focused on the components of food rather than the food as a whole. He goes through many scientific research and concepts influenced by this philosophy, but I think the most glrin example is that of supplements. It is interesting to learn that vitamins taken from a supplement are consideraby less effective than getting the same vitamins from whole foods.
Part 2: Paradigm as a Prison is broken up into three sections, which are listed below:
-The Triumph of Reductionism
-Reductionism Invades Nutritionism
-Reductionist Research
-Redutionist Biology
-Genetics versus Nutrition, Part One
-Genetics versus Nutrition, Part Two
-Reductionist Medicine
-Reductionist Supplementation
-Reductionist Social Policy
Part 3: Subtle Power and Its Wielders Summary
The last part of Whole breaks down the corporate structure behind why the WFPB diet struggles to be brought to light as the powerful, life changing thing that it is. This is definitely the most dissappointing section of the book. Not because of the facts that Campbell presents, but rather just seeing how many studies and scientists have been influenced by big pharma and other corporations.
Part 3: Subtle Power and Its Wielders is broken up into three sections, which are listed below:
-Understanding the System
-Industry Exploitation and Control
-Research and Profit
-Media Matters
-Government Information
-Blinded by the Light Bringers
Whole Rethinking the Science of Nutrition Review
Whole Rethinking the Science of Nutrition provides one of the most scientifically focussed resources on nutrition I have seen in recent years. It does such a thorough job at providing sources for most claims that is made. This does a great job at being very influential for those who rely on science-based works to determine what is best for their diets. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in the science behind the WFPB Diet.
